Sandwell is one of the seven local authorities that make up the West Midlands Metropolitan Area, the second largest conurbation in the UK. Transport and travel matter to almost everyone for work, school, shopping and social activities but we can create problems for ourselves and others in terms of congestion and pollution. The Sandwell car share scheme is one way of providing opportunities for people to change to more sustainable forms of travel and to make best use of the existing transport network.

The Sandwell car share scheme has been set up to make it as easy as possible for you to find a potential match for your journey. It is completely FREE to use and has been designed for both drivers and passengers and can be used to find a match for one-off trips or regular journeys. The site also links into the Council's TravelWise web pages, www.travelwise.sandwell.gov.uk, which offer information about other sustainable travel modes.

The success of this scheme relies on people logging onto the site and registering journeys; so please encourage others to do the same. It stands to reason that the greater the number of people using the site, the greater the chances of finding a match!

Many other local authorities, companies and organisations in the UK have recognised the importance of car sharing and have set up their own websites in conjunction with liftshare. For example, websites have been set up for the Peterborough Travelchoice Project (the originators of the “Share it” logo), Leeds City Council, Ikea etc. Along with the main liftshare website, you may find their websites useful if you travel around the country. Remember, the Liftshare system covers many parts of the country so you can find car share matches in Sandwell, in the rest of the West Midlands or in the rest of the UK .
